Local recycling centres in York
The two main recycling centres in York are Hazel Court Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) and Towthorpe and Strensall HWRC. Both accept a wide range of domestic waste types that you can dispose of and recycle for free. However, you can’t dispose of petrol, diesel, pesticides, tyres, or printer cartridges at either centre.
Charges may apply to dispose of some household waste. There’s no pedestrian or bike access at either site and you need a permit for any big vehicles (such as small vans, pickup trucks, box vans, and minibuses).
Important information
about York HWRCs
Towthorpe and Strensall HWRC only accepts ‘non-chargeable’ household waste (this excludes brick, rubble, gas bottles, plasterboard, and asbestos). You also can’t use this site for commercial waste disposal in York. The site has a 1.9-metre height barrier in place, so if your vehicle is taller it’s best to use Hazel Court HWRC and check if you need a permit.
Charges apply to dispose of certain domestic waste at Hazel Court HWRC including bricks, rubble, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, plasterboard, and bonded asbestos. You also need a permit if you bring any household waste to the site in a trailer (maximum size of 3 metres by 1.8 metres – trailer bed size only).
Landlords can apply for permits to dispose of tenants’ waste. You must also register to dispose of commercial and trade waste at Hazel Court HWRC. You can only dispose of commercial waste on Mondays to Fridays between 8.30am to 4.30pm.
York recycling charities
Plenty of items thrown out by homes in York can be used by others rather than being sent for recycling or disposal. Donating to a charity or selling on a local York marketplace helps reduce waste, which is the most sustainable solution. These are a few charities and organisations working to make York a greener place:
- The Recycle Project – recover, recycle, and reuse all sorts of waste through sales, workshops, and other activities to offer them back to the local York community.
- The Community Furniture Store – this store in York collects furniture and other household goods for free and makes them available for resale to people on low incomes.
- Various charity shops – York is home to many charity shops that accept some household items. These include Age UK, Barnado’s, British Heart Foundation, British Red Cross, Cancer Research, Macmillan Cancer Support, Martin House Hospice Shop, Oxfam, PDA Charity Shop, RSPCA York Shop, St. Leonard’s, Sue Ryder, The Alan Bott Charity, The Mind Shop, and York Samaritans.
